The John and Nevils Wilson School of Nursing
at Midwestern State University
Offering Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Programs
Undergraduate Programs
The Wilson School of Nursing offers curricula leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). There are two options in the BSN program:
-- Prelicensure Option for students who do not have a license to practice as a Registered Nurse, and
-- RN to BSN Option for licensed RN’s who have graduated from hospital-based programs (Diploma) or
2 year associate degree programs (ADN).
The undergraduate curriculum (BSN) includes general education courses which provide a foundation for understanding physiological, psychosocial, political and economic factors that may affect a person's health status. In addition, the nursing courses focus on nursing interventions that will provide clients with optimal health status. The nursing courses prepare the BSN graduate to provide holistic nursing care in a variety of complex environments that will enhance the optimal health of individuals, families, groups, and communities.
A Registered Nurse student has the option to pursue the RN to BSN or RN to MSN track with a flexible option designed to meet the needs of the working RN. Nursing classes are offered via distance learning methodologies with periodic visits to campus. Clinical experiences may be conducted in the geographical area in which the RN student resides. Upon admission, the RN may choose either the RN to BSN or the RN to MSN track.
The BSN program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.

Graduate Programs
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Midwestern State University is a professional program of study offered in concert with the mission and purpose of the University, building upon the foundation of undergraduate nursing education. There is also an RN to MSN Program for nurses who have graduated from hospital based programs or 2 year associate degree programs, as well as a Post-Masters Certification Program. The Masters programs focus on the development of refined analytical skills, broad-based perspectives, enhanced abilities to articulate viewpoints and positions, as well as the ability to integrate theory with practice and to utilize research findings in advanced practice roles. MSU's MSN program offers three options: Nurse Educator, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. The master's programs are accredited by the commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
The three tracks available are:
Nurse Educator: Provides the student with the knowledge and expertise to teach in any level of nursing program, i.e. LVN, ADN, BSN, and MSN. In addition, students are prepared to teach in staff development or patient education roles.
Family Nurse Practitioner: Prepares the student for practice as a Family Practitioner, meeting the requirements for advanced practice nursing established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. Graduates are eligible for national certification examinations.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner: Prepares the student for practice as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, meeting the requirements for advanced practice nursing established by the Texas Board of Nursing. Graduates are eligible for national certification examinations.
