Spring: September 1 through September 30

Undergraduate Program

The Wilson School of Nursing offers curricula leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). There are two options in the BSN program, including - (1) a prelicensure option for students who do not have a license to practice as a Registered Nurse, and (2) the RN to BSN option for licensed RN’s who have graduated from hospital based programs (Diploma) or 2 year associate degree programs (ADN).

The undergraduate curriculum (BSN) includes general education courses which provide a foundation for understanding physiological, psychosocial, political and economic factors that may affect a person's health status. In addition, the nursing courses focus on nursing interventions that will provide clients with optimal health status. The nursing courses prepare the BSN graduate to provide holistic nursing care in a variety of complex environments that will enhance the optimal health of individuals, families, groups, and communities.

A Registered Nurse student has the option to pursue the RN to BSN or RN to MSN track with a flexible option designed to meet the needs of the working RN. Nursing classes are offered via distance learning methodologies with periodic visits to campus. Clinical experiences may be conducted in the geographical area in which the RN student resides.  Upon admission, the RN may choose either the RN to BSN or the RN to MSN track.

The BSN program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.

Midwestern State University Wilson School of Nursing, a partner in the West Texas Nursing Education Coalition (WTNEC), is participating in a Regional Application Portal (RAP) project funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  This online portal will allow students to apply for admission to their self-selected choice of three schools of nursing in West Texas.  If students wishing to apply to the Wilson School of Nursing meet the criteria for admission and there is sufficient space, they will be admitted to MSU and will receive notification from the Wilson School of Nursing.  If, however, admission to MSU is not possible for that semester, the RAP will provide further options for schools in West Texas where space is available that semester.  STUDENTS ALWAYS HAVE THE CHOICE TO REAPPLY TO MSU for another semester.

Students wishing to apply to the Wilson School of Nursing must ALSO apply to the university through regular university processes.

The URL to access the application on the Regional Application Portal is https://portal.wtnec.org

RN to BSN and RN to MSN Applications
are accepted at any time.

Graduate Programs

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Midwestern State University is a professional program of study offered in concert with the mission and purpose of the University, building upon the foundation of undergraduate nursing education(and includes an RN to MSN Program for nurses who have graduated from hospital based programs or 2 year associate degree programs). Master's educations includes the development of refined analytical skills, broad-based perspectives, enhanced abilities to articulate viewpoints and positions, as well as the ability to integrate theory with practice and to utilize research findings in advanced practice roles. MSU's MSN program offers four options: Nurse Educator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Administrator, and Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. The master's programs are accredited by the commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The Nurse Educator program provides the student with the knowledge and expertise to teach in any level of nursing program, i.e. LVN, ADN, BSN, and MSN. In addition, students are prepared to teach in staff development or patient education roles.

The Family Nurse Practitioner Program prepares the student for practice as a Family Practitioner, meeting the requirements for advanced practice nursing established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. Graduates are eligible for national certification examinations.

The Nurse Administrator program prepares the student to act in managerial or administrative role within the health delivery system. In addition to nursing core courses and courses specific to the nurse administrator role, students will also take semester credit hours in Health Services Administration.
