Admission
Pre-Professional Program
The pre-professional program is open to any student wishing to pursue a degree in Athletic Training. This phase of the program is designed to help the student understand the roles and responsibilities of the Athletic Trainer; as well as, lay the foundation of skills and knowledge needed for successful advancement through the professional phase of the ATEP.
The Athletic Training pre-professional curriculum is open to any beginning freshman or transfer student who has been admitted to Midwestern State University. Students interested in the Athletic Training Educational Program (ATEP) should seek advisement from the ATEP faculty .
The pre-professional curriculum consists of a minimum of 7 hours including the following courses:
ATRN 1073 Care and Prevention
BIOL 1134 Anatomy and Physiology I
*It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that students complete the following courses as part of the pre-professional curriculum:
BIOL 1234 Anatomy and Physiology II
ATRN 1203 Health & Wellness

Clinical Observation Prerequisites
Documentation of the following requirements is mandatory before a student can begin clinical observation:
1. Completion of blood borne pathogen training.
2. Proof of immunization against measles, rubella, diphtheria, varicella, tetanus, tuberculosis and
hepatitis B*
* The hepatitis B (HBV) series of immunizations can be started upon arrival to MSU. The
series requires 3 shots: one initially, a second one month later, and a third six months later.
Documentation of the first shot is required before placement in the clinical setting.
Selection into the ATEP is competitive and completion of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the professional program. Applicants not formally accepted into the professional program may not enroll in ATRN upper level courses and are not eligible to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training. These applicants may reapply for entrance into the professional program for the following academic year.
Requirements for Admission into the Professional Program
1. Have completed the minimum pre-professsional curriculum including a "C" or better in the following
course by the end of the semester of application:
ATRN 1073 Care and Prevention
BIOL 1134 Anatomy and Physiology I
2. Have documented a minimum of 100 hours of clinical observations under the supervision of
a Certified Athletic Trainer.
3. Immunizations are complete.
4. Proof of CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification and First Aid certification
5. Submit the following items to the ATEP director:
- ATEP application
- Three letters of recommendation
- Documentation of meeting technical standards for admission to the ATEP
6. Complete an ATEP admissions interview with the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator,
Head Athletic Trainer, one Assistant Athletic Trainer, and an ACI, CI, or Department Faculty Member.
The deadline for application is March 1 for the following Fall.
Due to the competitiveness of the program, not all applicants meeting the criteria will be selected for admission to the ATEP. Selection into the ATEP will be based on the following criteria:
1. Pre-requisite GPA Yes/No
2. Hours of Obsevation Yes/No
3. Completed File Yes/No
***Any 'No' categories will not be considered for an interview and not able to continue in the admissions process.
4. Cumulative GPA^^^ 33%
5. Interview 33%
6. Average of ACI/CI Evals 33%
^^^If a student has attempted a course multiple times at other institutions, the Athletic Training Education Program will consider only the highest grade. The lower grade will not be considered in Cumulative GPA.
Admissions Timeline
Application to the Professional Phase of the Athletic Training Education Program will follow the following timeline:
Application Deadline - March 1, 2010
Grade Check Due - March 22, 2010
Interview - March 23 - 30, 2010
Admission Decision - April 5, 2010
The ATEP will accept applications until June 30, providing there are additional openings in the Program.
Admissions Categories
Following the Interview Committee decision, every applicant will recieve a letter indicating their status. While midterm grades were a temporary indicator, the end of semester grades will be the final determinant for admission. Thus, if a student was receiving a passing grade in BIOL 1234 at mid-semester and was temporarily accepted, the student may be dismissed from the program in mid-May if the final grade did not meet the admission policy requirements. Each student will fall into one of the following categories:
Accepted: Student has been accepted into the Professional Phase pending final grades in all courses.
Probation: Student has been accepted into the Professional Phase pending final grade in all courses. The committee is aware of a deficiency that needs to be resolved through a growth plan. An individual growth plan will be prepared by the ATEP faculty, which the student MUST agree to and sign before the start of Level 2.
Failed to Qualify: Student has not been accepted into the Professional Phase due to deficiencies in the Admissions Policy. These deficiencies will be outlined in the dismissal letter.
Retention
Once admitted into the ATEP, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, and must receive no lower than a “C” in all major and associated courses (listed in student handbook). Students who do not maintain a 2.5 GPA will be placed on probation for a semester. If after one semester they have not achieved a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5, they may be dismissed from the program, or allowed to continue for a maximum of one additional probationary semester. The latter condition will be granted only with permission from the ATEP Director and the chair of the Department of Kinesiology. Students who receive a grade lower than a “C” in ATRN courses, will be on probation until they are able to repeat that course. Students will not be allowed to progress onto the next semester or level of ATRN courses until the course has been repeated and the grade has been replaced with a “C” or better. If a student fails to achieve a “C” or better during their second attempt, the student will be dismissed from the ATEP. Students receiving below a “C” in associated coursework (listed in student handbook) will be on probation for a semester. The course must be repeated in the following semester, and the grade must be replaced with a “C” or better. If after one semester they have not replaced the grade, they may be dismissed from the program, or allowed to continue for a maximum of one additional probationary semester. The latter condition will be granted only with permission from the ATEP Director and the chair of the Department of Kinesiology.
