Program Description
The Athletic Training Educational Program at Midwestern State University is a Bachelor of Science Degree Program that incorporates classroom and clinical experiences to foster the education necessary to be successful as an entry-level athletic trainer. The athletic training student at MSU will have the opportunity to gain hands on experiences with athletes and physically active individuals in both on-campus and off-campus sites including sports medicine clinics, physicians offices, high schools, and colleges and universities. Due to the clinical structure, the ATEP takes a minimum of four years to complete. Additionally, if the student wishes to earn a teaching certificate or complete a minor field of study, graduation may require an additional semester(s) of courses.
The ATEP received accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in July of 2005. Students who successfully complete the athletic training curriculum are now eligible to sit for the national certification exam given by the Board of Certification of Athletic Trainers.
Upon completion of this degree, students are also eligible to apply for the Texas Athletic Training Licensure Exam administered by the Texas Department of Health.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Athletic Training Educational Program at Midwestern State University is to provide an active learning environment that facilitates the use of athletic training theory to develop proficient practical skills and foster personal and professional excellence for the entry-level athletic trainer.
Goals
1. Foster an optimal learning environment that develops critical thinking and decision making skills necessary for success in the Athletic Training Profession. Recruit athletic training students that will be successful in the ATEP.
